Longmont- Catrina Painting

September 23, 2023

The name, Catrina Ball, refers to the Calavera Catrina – a 1910–1913 zinc etching by the Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era. La Catrina has become an icon of the Mexican Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

All ages are invited to join us in celebrating Dia de Los Muertos with community painting of Catrina's for our South Gallery/Public Library Exhibition and Dia de los Muertos Exhibit opening! Painting will occur outdoors as well as in our Main and upstairs galleries. We will also be working on our creating new Gigantes throughout the month in the South Gallery

We will be auctioning off the masks at the Exhibit Opening! Artists will receive 40% of the auction price, with artists having an option to donate any portion of that back tot he Firehouse to support our Art Education outreach programs. We hope that you will join us to create these works of art that support and sustain the Firehouse Art Center, while educating the community on this wonderful cultural event!

All materials for this activity are provided, (the paper is 3’x6’) but a $5-10 donation would be much appreciated!

Many times and days offered to fit into your schedule! Please reserve your spot!
